Fifteen years after the end of apartheid, poverty and inequality in South Africa have increased. The heritage of the liberation struggle means that today many communities are taking action to challenge this injustice. Durban’s shack dwellers started to build a movement in 2005 and Abahlali baseMjondolo is now the largest social movement of the poor in post-apartheid South Africa. The movement’s key demand is for ‘Land & Housing in the City’ but it has also successfully politicized and fought for an end to forced removals and for access to education and the provision of water, electricity, sanitation, health care and refuse removal as well as bottom up popular democracy. Amongst other victories the Abahlali have democratized the governance of many settlements, stopped evictions in a number of settlements, won access to schools and forced numerous government officials to ‘come down to the people’.

Climate Camp are holding a fundraising social gathering this Saturday night from 7pm – 1am. Anyone attending the National Gathering during the day at Greenpeace gets in free, everyone else is expected to give a donation of a couple of quid. D.A.M. formed from a cohort of U.S. military veterans, conscientious objectors, war resisters, social justice activists and community organizers from the San Francisco Bay Area. The idea is to connect anti-war activists and war resisters from the US with those in Israel/Palestine to work towards forms of more substantive support and solidarity for each other’s movements and to work collectively against the destructive forces militarism on a global scale. All money raised during this event will go towards funding the D.A.M. project.

Meanwhile thousands of peasants live in marginal lands in cities and rural areas. The Brazilian Landless Worker’s Movement (MST) has proved a huge success with the disenfranchised rural and urban poor in Brazil – becoming one of the largest social movements in the world.
Please come for a day of music and information in support of MST.

The freeschool is in a newly squatted building and will be focused on squatting and housing related issues, including workshops and skillshares on plumbing, electricity, gentrification, gender and housing, and the property markets

Shell’s ships entered the bay at Rossport on 01/06/09, work continued 24 hours a day, until two successful boarding actions by protesters forced Van Oord, the dredging company, to pull out on 06/06/09. The battle was won but the war continues as the Camp now prepares for the arrival of the Solitaire, the worlds largest pipe-laying ship. This is an urgent call to support the community in their struggle against this notoriously violent and destructive multinational.
